Since the beginnings of human history, when the first crude tools were made, human beings have been inventors. Considering how far we have come from those simple stone axes and farming tools, we realize how enormously the power of human thought has progressed in making life easier. Making life more comfortable and attractive continues to motivate inventors, and always will.

Patent laws are the primary safeguards for inventions and inventors, and in our time are essential to the encouragement of mankind’s progress. Since the 19th Century the assurance of intellectual property rights has expanded into every aspect of industry and trade. The current Industrial Rights System includes the protection of inventions and trade secrets, trademarks and logos, industrial designs, geographic symbols, trade and business names, integrated circuit topography, computer software (including technical features), Internet domain names, bio-technical inventions and new plant varieties.

In 1883, the Paris Convention on the Protection of Industrial Rights put patent safeguards into the international arena; additional treaties and conventions have followed.

In Turkey, the Ankara Patent Bureau has played a vital role in the development and assurance of industrial rights ever since Hayri Derecioglu, a retired industrial inspector, founded the company in 1964. We have prepared legislation, provided training, instigated awareness of the issues and developed the vocational framework for patent and trademark attorneys; currently the Bureau serves as a training ground for such lawyers.

Our pioneering achievements include the development of trademark and patent databases and conducting searches in an electronic environment, classification of international trademark registrations in accordance with the Nice Agreement, the provision of monitoring services by means of artificial intelligence computer software, and the creation of electronic bulletins regarding patents, trademarks and industrial design.
